Anal Glands? what do they do to express anal glands...and how does it help the dog |
EXTERNALLY:
A rag or tissue is held up to the anus and both sides of the anal area are squeezed. If the secretion is very pasty, this method may be inadequate to empty the sacs.
INTERNALLY:
A lubricated gloved finger is inserted in the anus and the sac is squeezed between thumb & forefinger into a tissue held externally. The procedure is repeated on the opposite side.
HOW IT HELPS:
Walking around and normal defecation serves to empty the glands but some animals become unable to empty their glands on their own at all. The sacs become impacted and uncomfortable. |
Anal glands? My dog has been licking his behind for two days or so now and there is a somewhat enlarged red bump. Im thinking it is his anal glands but am going to the vet tomake sure. how much do you think this would cost ?? |
Agree with the other Vet techs. Sounds like an anal gland abcess. Should be around $50 for antibiotics and expression. If the gland ruptures, cleaning the abcess out will be more.
Edit: The vets where I worked didn't allow the technicians to express anal glands. The reason was because there could be a mass in the rectum causing the problem, and a tech may not pick up on it. That was their reasoning anyway. I do my own cat's anal glands. |
Anal glands? has anyone ever heard of dogs having to have their anal glands massaged.i was told that this was common if they started to smell and that you could esp tell on inside dogs. i thought they just needed a bath. this is a serious question |

What are the benefits of squeezing a dogs anal glands? Recently, we took my yellow lab to the vet and I was perplexed. The vet squeezed my dogs anal glands. He said she was full and they really needed to be done. What is this and why should it be done? What causes a build up of "gunk" in her anal glands? What is the "gunk"? |
| It keeps them clean and free from infection. If your dog has a problem releasing the stink glands they will become infected and then they have to have surgery to remove them. So squeazing them seems like a much better option, no? |
How do I express my dogs anal glands internally? I have to take my dog to the vet about once a month to have his anal glands expressed internally. Everywhere i look on the web it tells me that you can learn to do it at home, but it never says how. I would like to know how to do it, whether you tell me how or you recommend a place to learn. I have a strong stomach and will be able to handle the smell. |
Here's some links below. I would first take your dog to the vet the next time to get the anal sacs expressed , and ask the technician or vet to show you. Then any questions you might have about it, you can ask them right there. It's important to actually see the discharge so you know what's normal, and what may be the sign of a serious impaction and infection. They can check after you've expressed the sacs to see if they are completely empty. Good luck!

What can you do to treat a dog with over active anal glands? My dog is 8 years old, and he has suddenly developed very over active anal glands. His glands were squeezed 6 weeks ago and they have not stopped secreting a very bad oder. Please only serious answers. |
First off he should be checked to make sure there are no signs of infection in the secretion as this will need treatment or the smell will not clear up, and can lead to abcessation.
Have his faeces changed consistency over the last few weeks? Normally the anal glands are squeezed as the dog passes faeces and a small amount of the secretion is passed on the faeces, so if he has had diarrhoea or softer faeces then he might not have been naturally emptying his anal glands.
You can either take him to your vet/nurse to get them emptied more frequently and often they can teach you how to do it so you do not have to go back so frequently. You can also try adding some fibre to his diet to increase the density of his faeces and so decrease the amount you have to manually empty his glands.
Add- balanced dog foods for normal animals are not high enough in fibre for this, you can either get a diet food that has a higher percentage of fibre or buy powdered fibre from a health food shop and add a tablespoon to his normal food. |
How to prevent dog going vets for anal glands to be expressed? Hi, my dog (German Shepherd) keeps having to go to the vets every 5/6 weeks to have her anal glands expressed. Is there anything I can do to prevent this. SHe is on Royal Canin Dry dog food. Ive tried her with bran flakes in her food, but this does not seem to do any better.... any ideas would be very gratefully received!! Thanks |
The anal glands can be removed but it's not a very pleasant thing for the dog to go through.
My Lab needs hers expressing regularly, the vet advised bran in her diet which has helped firm her poo up, also he said to try Psyllium husks from any health shop.
For every 100g of dry food, add 16g of bran and 4g of Psyllium husks.
She normally has her anal glands expressed every month, it's been 2 months now and she still doesn't need them doing, so it is working.
If your dog is a scavenger like mine, then try and stop it eating everything it finds, mine will eat anything dead and rotting which causes diarrhoea and then her glands get compacted again.
The vet might have more advise for you. |
Why does my dog keep expressing her anal glands? There is no redness, holes, or swelling and I had the vet look at her. We have no idea why, but she expresses her anal glands and it smells AWFUL! Sometimes she leaves traces on her blankets. Does anyone have any idea why she does this????
Thanks. |
Well, a vet should have done a little more than just look. If she is still expressing anal gland, there actually could be a minor infection and it has not shown the typical redness or puss yet.
I would take her back to the vet and ask him to SHOW YOU how to manually express anal sacs during the visit. Have him do it. Likely they are full. If he does it correctly, the problem may be solved with that visit.
If he detects pus or signs of infection, he will give you some medicine that needs to be squirted into each of the anal sacs twice daily. He will also tell you to apply hot moist wash cloths to the anal sacs several times daily to keep the infection draining rather than sealing up. |
How do I express the anal glands of my Pug? My Pug is overweight, She sits and wiggles her hips back and forth. I am told that her problem probably is her anal glands. They need to be expressed. |
If she is overweight it will be harder to express her anal glands.
Here is a video that shows the correct way to express them:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tjsWI_3a…
I suggest doing it in the bathtub, it is a very FOUL smell, much like rotten fish. |
How do you ask the groomer to express a dog's anal glands? I don't think our groomers at PetSmart regularly express my dog's anal glands, considering she is a big dog. However, her rear has been bothering her and she is emitting a foul odor and I think it is her anal glands. How do I ask the groomer to express them? Do I just say can you clean them out? Or what? |
| Just be honest and straight up. Ask them if expressing the glands is included in the grooming because that's what most groomers do. It's professional/mature of you to use the terminology 'expressing the anal glands', so don't worry if you feel embarrassed, there's no need and it's a very common procedure :) |
